SINGER-PIANISTS

NATHAN MARTIN

Nathan MartinWith a very sense of humor and a wicked smile, Nathan Martin could easily be on his way to becoming London's answer to a young Michael Feinstein. He's confident, funny, and displays excellent musicianship while singing and tickling the ivories. "Charm" seems to have gone out of fashion these days, but this performer has got it in abundance, not to mention talent and, at the young age of 24, Martin has amassed a list of credits performers more than twice his age would envy.

He recently appeared in Dorothy Fields Forever at the King's Head Theatre as musical arranger and performer, picking up a rave from the London Evening Standard ("the evening's highlight") in the process. He has served as musical director for productions as diverse as Helen Lederer's One Night Stand, Assassins, High Spirits and After the Fair and played piano for West End shows like Romance, Romance, Side by Side by Sondheim, Miss Saigon and The Lion King. More importantly, he's been paying attention while accompanying accomplished singers on both sides of the Atlantic -singers like Kaye Ballard, Brent Barrett, Claiborne Cary, Steven Brinberg, Georgia Osborne, Linzi Hateley, Liz Robertson, David Campbell and dozens of others.

His debut solo show, Nathan Martin--So Far, was first performed at London's Jermyn Street Theatre and has finally made it across the pond to Don't Tell Mama. It's a delight, with a generous handful of wonderful songs that showcase both his beautiful tenor as well as his dexterous keyboard technique. Comedy numbers like "Streisand Got There First" (Richard Kates) and "I'm Very Good In Bed" (Richard Stilgoe) benefit from his understated delivery and ballads such as "Sailing On" (Menken/Pitchford) and the title song "So Far" (Rodgers/Hammerstein) ring true with emotional honesty.
